Volkswagen’s naming strategy for its electric models is starting to make a bit more sense, with the upcoming ID. Tiguan set to replace both the ID.4 and ID.5 when it hits the market in early 2027. Following the recently announced ID.Polo and ID.Cross, the ID.Tiguan will bring one of VW’s most recognisable names into the EV era, with its world premiere scheduled for early October. Until then, the near-production model is still pounding the test miles wearing some rather cool camouflage.

It’s not exactly a small name to live up to. More than 8.3 million Tiguans have rolled off production lines to date, making it one of Volkswagen’s most successful models. According to VW boss Thomas Schäfer, the new electric SUV will carry that legacy forward with premium design, generous interior space, intuitive operation and the latest technology. The ID. Tiguan will sit alongside the existing combustion- and hybrid-powered Tiguan, giving buyers a choice between traditional power and full electrification without having to jump between different model names.

Volkswagen clearly isn’t messing about with its SUV strategy, either. The Tiguan is currently the brand’s best-selling model worldwide, while combined deliveries of the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, topped a million units last year. Meanwhile, the ID.4 and ID.5 have clocked up more than 950,000 deliveries since 2021, making them two of VW Group’s most successful electric model lines.

With the ID. Tiguan taking over from both, VW is effectively bringing its electric SUV offering under one of its biggest nameplates. We’ll find out exactly what that means for the production car when the covers are fully removed in early October. When we see it here at PVW, you’ll see it too.
