The Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 has been crowned Hatchback of the Year at the inaugural Car Genius Awards, hosted by Car magazine. The awards recognise the brands, products and innovations that are shaping the future of the automotive industry, with winners selected by the publication’s team of automotive experts.
The judges praised the anniversary edition for delivering an exceptional driving experience. Car Editor Ben Miller described it as “the best Golf GTI since 2016’s Clubsport S,” highlighting its impressive balance of performance, precision and everyday usability.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is the most powerful and fastest production GTI ever built. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine producing 325 PS (239 kW) and 420 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission driving the front wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph) where permitted.
Volkswagen has also upgraded the chassis and suspension to match the increased performance. The GTI EDITION 50 sits 15 mm lower than the standard Golf GTI and features Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) as standard, providing sharper handling while maintaining the comfort expected from a daily-driven hatchback.
For buyers wanting even greater performance, Volkswagen offers an optional Performance Package. This package reduces the vehicle’s weight by approximately 25 kg through the addition of a lightweight Akrapovič titanium exhaust system and 19-inch forged Warmenau alloy wheels. It also includes semi-slick tyres, revised suspension tuning, stiffer springs and modified front axle geometry for improved grip and handling on both road and track.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 measures 4,292 mm in length, 1,789 mm in width and 1,463 mm in height, while offering a practical 374-litre luggage capacity. Despite its performance-focused engineering, it remains a practical hot hatch suitable for everyday use.
Winning the inaugural Car Genius Award further cements the Golf GTI EDITION 50’s position as one of the most capable performance hatchbacks on the market, celebrating 50 years of the iconic GTI nameplate with its most advanced production model to date.
