2026 VW Polo Cup Series Kicks Off This Weekend!

Remember the epic images of the 1980s VW Polo Cup? It's back again!

The new Polo returns to bumper-to-bumper motorsport this weekend, with the first round of the Polo Cup 2026 – an epic single-model race program touring Germany’s most iconic tracks.

Designed as a low-cost, grass-roots platform for emerging drivers, the Polo Cup series is a collaboration between the South African divisions of Volkswagen Motorsport and the Volkswagen Group, alongside race marketing and consultancy firm Maraco Management.

It’s also the latest in a long line of closely fought Polo-based race programs dating back to the 1980s.

Remember the epic images of the 1980s VW Polo Cup, and the killer Volkswagen logo wheels made by Centra that they used in that series? Or how about the 1990s Polo G40 Cup in the UK, with its field of colourfully-painted hatchbacks? Maybe the GTI-based Polo Cup of the late 2000s, which spawned what was (at the time) the most powerful version of Volkswagen’s hatchback to date?

If not, here’s a refresher:

This time, it’s the new Polo GTI that’s the star. Cup racers are built on the same line as the roadgoing Polo line-up in Kariega, South Africa, where Volkswagen Motorsport has maintained a presence, and are shipped to Germany and sold “ready to race” alongside other dealership stock.

Each car features a sequential gearbox produced in South Africa, factory-prepped roll cages and wide body panels, which brings the price under the now-discontinued German factory Golf TCR cars – even the “base model” Golf that used the DSG transmissions.

The drivers, including Volkswagen test driver Benny Leuchter, have told us that the performance remains close to TC level – with power coming from a spec 2.0T TSI engine shared with the GTIs. Power reportedly sits a little north of 300hp, and is of course the same for each race car to keep a level playing field.

There’s always been something extra cool about Touring Cars in general, and seeing a track full of road-car-derived models battling it out usually means tight fun racing, so we’re all excited to watch the new series. There are plans to expand to a second European championship in Netherlands in 2027.

We wish the teams, drivers, and organisers the very best, and are cheering for the Polo Cup’s return!
